Getting Aligned With God: Fasting

significance of fasting

Hi!!

Welcome to the first step to Getting Aligned with God! Today we will talk a bit about fasting. There’s lots of confusion when it comes to fasting and there are many scriptures in the bible that give certain specifications for fasting; when it’s done, why, where, who, what, how and how long.

Well, for me fasting starts with a choice. It’s a choice to deny the flesh of something it craves, and seeking to fully fulfil my spirit. It’s me decreasing so that God in me may increase (John 3:30-31). Christians fast for healing, answers to prayer, closeness to God, to have certain things broken off them, to help them get aligned with God.

Letting go of what we want, especially when it’s no good for us, sometimes requires a little extra umph, extra help, some reinforcement. That’s where fasting comes in.  The first 2 scriptures in our January 2018 SWP (scripture writing plan) were scriptures pertaining to fasting. Have you decided what you will fast from? There are many ways to fast. There’s the Daniel Fast, there’s fasting where you only drink water and/or juices, and then there’s a fast where you fast from things, people or situations that pull you away from God or have a strong hold on your life. For instance foods, that guy who you know you need to move away from or that friend or family member who criticizes your faith, or fast from social media! For me, I’m fasting from sweets; no candy, cakes, ice cream, cookies, pies, cinnamon rolls, all the things that I absolutely love. I don’t eat these things all the time but I do love them and sometimes the cravings can get out of hand or I’ll find myself turning to them when I’m a bit stressed or frustrated. So, I’m starting this year off in getting aligned with God by denying my flesh and instead of baking something to try to ease a frustration, I’m going to God, I’ll be praying and reading scripture instead. As for the length of a fast, it depends on you. Every year my church does a 21 day fast in January and we started this past Saturday, January 6th. Some people do 40 days as Jesus did when He was tempted in the desert by satan (Matthew 4:1-11). Then there are short fasts throughout the year. I do these based on what’s going on in my life, or if I’m seeking clear answers from God. I’ll do a week-long fast and say, not eat anything all day until 4pm. If you’re not sure, pray and ask God, He’ll give you a time period and what to fast from. During this type of fast, you can ask someone to fast with you or to be your prayer partner during your fast.

Fasting is a way to help to train you to run to God first and not to those things, people or situations that pull you away from God. In order to move forward with God we have to be in line with Him.  We have to be on the same side of the fence, we can’t straddle. Fasting is making a choice for our relationship with Christ. It’s also a way to make your spirit more sensitive to His voice. Fasting requires us to depend on Him to get us through denying our flesh and in the first week, you may find that your flesh is screaming at you like a 2-year-old having a temper tantrum because it wants what it wants. When your flesh starts screaming, you yell back at it with scripture! I also must warn you of the spiritual warfare that comes with fasting. It’s the enemy, the devil, satan, trying to trip you up and pull your affections away from God. That’s why prayer is so important during fasting! You can’t fast and not pray, you just can’t. Your fast will be in vain. You can’t get close to the Father without having a conversation with Him and that’s prayer.

You don’t have to go through your journey of fasting alone. I have set up a Facebook group that pertains to this series and there we will share about our fasts, and other things we’re learing during this series. If you’re interested, click here!

I look forward to this journey with you and please, if there are any questions, comments or concerns feel free to ask!

Be blessed & encouraged,

Shannon

Start Anew

happy-new-year-2018-7

Anew:

1. over again; again; once more: to play the tune anew.
2. in a new form or manner: to write the story anew.
Happy New Year! Finally, it’s 2018! I’m hesitantly excited! Why hesitant? Well, because I really don’t know what to expect. God has removed my comfort zones and I’m truly walking on water, starting anew.
For those of you who don’t know or haven’t heard of this concept, instead of making tons of resolutions that I quit after a month, I pray and ask God for one word to focus on for the year. There’s a book that started this concept called One Word That Will Change Your Life and there’s also a 4 day study plan via Youversion.com Bible app that you can use. Each year that I’ve done this, I’ve learned something new. For instance, for 2016 my word was ‘joy’. I learned that even though there were a few joyful things that happened, I mostly learned that I had to choose joy. 2017’s word was ‘new’ and last year was filled with new experiences, both good and challenging. My 2018 word is ‘anew’. When I first heard this word, I quickly thought that I’d heard wrong because it sounds like ‘new’ but then Holy Spirit told me to “look it up”, so, I did. Anew means to start again, in a new form or manner, start anew. This word helps me to understand two things I felt led to do last year that I didn’t want to do and really didn’t understand why He was asking me to do them. Ironically, I’m not sure what exactly I’m starting over on. This is where the scripture that says the righteous shall walk by faith and not by sight comes into play (2 Corinthians 5:7). I’m truly trusting God day by day for the next steps in my journey.
One thing I do know is to start this year with a new series called Getting Aligned with God. What a great way to start the year, getting in step with God! We all have our own goals, hopes, wishes, dreams, but we often forget to ask God what He would have us to do. After all, He is the one that knows the plans that He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11)! So for the next 3 weeks, we’ll be focusing on getting aligned with God by fasting, purging, and prioritizing our lives based on how God leads us in these areas. Now, making changes in our life isn’t always easy, that’s why I have a group set up for those of us who are participating in this series. This is a closed Facebook group that you can connect to by clicking here. In the group we will check in with each other and share any challenges we’re having or revelations that we’ve learned. Also, there’s a scripture writing plan, January 2018 SWP that has scriptures to guide us along the way. The scripture writing plan is posted in the group as well.
I hope that you will join us on this journey and please, share with your friends, family or any one you know who’d like to or who needs to join in!
I pray that God blesses you all throughout this year! I’m looking forward to hearing your stories!
Be blessed & encouraged,

Goodbye 2017!

2017-2018

I’m still in shock that 2017 is almost over! It seems like yesterday I was wistfully thinking of all the great things to come in 2017. I was even more so hopeful for this year because the word that the Lord had given me was “new”. What’s more exciting than new things, people and experiences?! Well, an interesting and exciting year it truly has been! But not because I’ve had these miraculous answers to prayer either. One of the experiences I’m so excited about is that I published my first book and had a wonderful book release celebration surrounded by so many people whom I love dearly and have helped me so much throughout the process of writing and publishing my book.

I’ve learned so much more about myself because God (and other prophets) confirmed my calling as a prophetess and I’ve met God in a totally new capacity! I co- facilitated my first purity retreat in which I had the honor and privilege to prophesy over some absolutely beautiful, strong young women of God! This was my first time prophesying over more than 1 person and it was one of the most exhilarating, humbling, yet most amazing experiences of my life! I’ve totally had to rewire my mind about what I thought a prophetess was. I had to weed through the false to find the true ones and the true ones were hard to find. That’s because there are so many false ones screaming so loudly for their own personal gain and attention! Being a prophetess/prophet is so much more than sharing a prophetic word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sad to see and it’s made me quite angry because now when someone who’s truly been called by God, we have to deal with all the mess that’s been dealt by those who called themselves. God doesn’t release you to even know for sure until after you’ve been tried in some serious fire and even then, there’s more fire to come and walk through, but I digress.

I’ve also learned some very valuable lessons. I’ve learned that the higher or deeper you go with the Father, the more pain you feel in your heart because your heart breaks for what breaks His, you see what you don’t want to see and you say things that people don’t want to hear. You have to walk away from some things you don’t want to walk away from and what has been the hardest has been not saying stuff until it’s time! But I’ve decided to learn from Josephs example and wait on God. Which brings me to the greatest lesson and it’s that I can’t go wrong with obeying God regardless of the consequences. I’ve learned that people are seasonal, but not always because there’s something wrong with them but because their season in your life is done. I’ve learned that being comfortable is a quick way for God to totally change your assignment and move you along to something else and you just continue to walk on water and get comfortable being uncomfortable.  And just because something’s good and growing, doesn’t mean you’re supposed to stay there. As a prophetess, one of my purposes is to build and to plant (Jeremiah 1:10). Even though He moves some people out-of-the-way, He replaces them with the people who you need and they come from all over the world and the most unlikely places! One would think that knowing your calling and purpose would be freeing, and in some aspects it is, but it really shows you who you really are and just how much you truly need God! There’s no way you can fulfill your purpose on this earth without Him.  You also learn the true condition of your heart, your insecurities and vulnerabilities and the spiritual warfare is turned up several notches!

Why am I sharing this? I’m sharing this because I want whoever reads this to take this year for what it is, whether it’s been awesome or awful. Take the good and appreciate it, take the bad, ugly and painful and learn from it, grow from it and share your testimony! Look at it this way, you made it through another year and a lot of others didn’t. Getting the word “new” didn’t get me what I was hoping and still praying for, but it did get me what I needed and that was me learning that I so desperately need my God!

So what’s next for me? Well, I’ve set a lofty goal to share something with you all every week next year!!! Oh my goodness that made me nervous just typing it! Stay tuned and I hope that you’ll join me! I hope to teach more, help more, serve more, and meet God in new and exciting ways. I give Him permission 🙂 to not only step out of my little box that I’d put Him in, but to throw it away! I’m completely open to all that He has for me no matter how hard or uncomfortable they may be, I know that through and with Him, nothing’s impossible and that it’s for my good and the good of those He sends me to but most importantly, it’s all for His GLORY! And for that alone, I’m willing and ready. Lord, hear am I, send me!

Here’s to an unpredictable, God filled, God led New Year!

Be blessed & encouraged,

Prophetess Shannon 🙂

Come Away from Her, MY People

20170711_122220 (1)

I saw this BET sponsored picture as I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and immediately my heart was arrested! This picture speaks volumes!! I stopped scrolling and went upstairs to start laundry but Holy Spirit wouldn’t leave me alone and He brought this scripture to mind:

Revelation 18:4-5 (NLT)

Then I heard another voice calling from heaven,

“Come away from her, my people.
Do not take part in her sins,
or you will be punished with her.
For her sins are piled as high as heaven,
and God remembers her evil deeds.

God means what He says about us being Holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16).  He clearly tells us not to take part in the sins of this world! If you are are woman of God, especially a single woman of God, why oh why would you want to soak this type of behavior into your mind? If you think it doesn’t affect your thinking you’re wrong.  It’s not just entertainment either! The prince of the air knows exactly what he’s doing (Ephesians 2:2). Even if you’re not living your life as Mary Jane, taking in behaviors such as this, we can become tolerable and even accepting of this behavior. It’s exactly what the enemy wants! Look at the caption! There’s still time to become obsessed! Seriously?! We spend more time soaking in the world instead of the Word and become dumb and defenseless to the tactics of the enemy! Seriously, I can hear the enemy and see his work all in this picture.  When we say yes to God, we’ve joined the battle against the kingdom of darkness. In wars, there’s fighting going on and if you don’t know how to fight or use your weapon, then you die! The Word of God is our sword and if you don’t know what it says and warns us of, you will be taken down!

What’s so heartbreaking is what this show, this picture is portraying. She’s given her body away to someone who isn’t her husband, probably several people, guys who are very attractive, and yet she still doesn’t have what she wants! All she’s done is tie her soul to several guys and now her life is a hot mess categorized as drama and entertainment! The pain in her face says it all! If you’re searching for a Godly man and want to be in a godly relationship then why are you feeding this stuff to your spirit?! If you are a child of the living God, with His Spirit living in you and you know that He’s with you every where you go then how do you think He feels about this?! This goes for married women as well! Why do you watch this? You’re not immune to the effects of satan’s ploys just because you’ve said “I do”. Especially if you’re going through some not so pleasant issues right now in your marriage. Sisters, don’t underestimate the power that the prince of the air has as far as deception goes (Ephesians 2:2).  You’re giving him permission by agreeing with the sin that’s promoted through this show and other shows such as Scandal and Insecure! If you’re still single and wondering why you’re still only attracting a certain type of guy, then check yourself! What are you doing, how are you acting and what type of signal is your spirit sending. God warns His sons of the “strange woman” in the book of Proverbs (Proverbs 5:3-23). Are you the one He’s warning His son about? Why would any woman of God want to be Mary Jane when God has called us to be so very much more! We are His daughters! The daughters of the King, the Creator of the Universe!

Call me dramatic if you want but God is serious! The enemy is serious too! Be mindful of what you’re taking in! The Bible tells us that the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour! (1 Peter 5:8) Keep your guards up sisters, the enemy is very crafty, look at how he deceived Eve! If what you’re watching, listening to, or the people you’re hanging around are not bringing you closer to God, then it’s time to step away! To read more about living a life that’s pleasing to God, whether single or married, check out my new book, Love, Jesus, Sex: Experiences & Lessons Learned!
